Tuina Therapy for Structural Disorders of the Upper Extremity with Bill Helm

Join us this Veterans Day weekend, November 10-12, 2017 to learn Tuina techniques and protocols from Bill Helm, Tuina and Qi Gong Teacher, AOBTA® Certified Instructor, and longtime former Chair of the Massage and Bodywork Program at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine.

The weekend will begin on Friday with a special 7-hour class devoted entirely to the oscillating hand techniques used in Tuina bodywork to restore correct anatomical musculoskeletal relationships and neuromuscular patterns, and to increase the circulation of blood and qi.

For those who are familiar with the techniques of rolling, grasping, kneading, pressing, and finger springing, this will be a valuable opportunity for review under Bill’s direct instruction. For those unfamiliar with these techniques, this class is not only a rare opportunity to learn them from an exprienced teacher, but also required to get the full benefit of the rest of the workshop.

The Saturday morning session will concentrate on identifying structural disorders of the shoulder, including shoulder strain/sprain, tendinitis, bicipital tendinitis, frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), rotator cuff tendinitis or tear, dislocation of glenohumeral joint, subacromial bursitis, shoulder separation, and bi syndrome of shoulder.

Saturday afternoon will focus on identifying structural disorders of the elbow, including strain/sprain of the elbow’s soft tissue, lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), medial epicondylitis (little league elbow), dislocation/separation, ulnar neuritis, medial nerve entrapment, ulnar bursitis, and bi syndrome of the elbow.

Sunday morning will concentrate on identifying structural disorders of the wrist, including strain/sprain of the soft tissue of the wrist, carpal tunnel syndrome, flexor/extensor tenosynovitis, dislocation of carpal bones, and fracture of radial/ulnar styloid process.

Sunday afternoon will complete the workshop with an examination of structural disorders of the hand and fingers, including strain/sprain of fingers, tearing of the joint capsule of the inter-phalangeal joint(s), dislocation, metacarpal fracture, and bi syndrome for the wrist and hand.

With each session, after an assessment protocol has been presented and the structural disorders identified, Bill will demonstrate specific Tuina sequences, including both oscillating techniques and specific applicable acupoints, to relieve pain and promote healing. All participants will then have time to practice these sequences under Bill's supervision, with plenty of opportunity to ask questions and receive direct personal instruction.

Bill’s last workshop was very successful. Most of the participants expressed an interest in coming back, so be sure to sign up early. Don’t miss this opportunity to study with someone who is not only a great Tuina practitioner, but also a wonderful teacher.

Tuina Hand Techniques
12:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Day One Course description: In this hands on practical class students will be taught specific Tuina oscillating hand techniques, as well as principals of effective expression of kinesthetic force. Patterns and underlying factors of Bi Syndrome and Deficient Wei Qi will also be identified, and students will have the opportunity to practice, under supervision, a whole body Tuina treatment designed to expel pathogenic factors from the channels, muscles, tendons, and joints, relieve qi and blood stagnation, and tonify underlying deficiencies.

Acupuncturists and Asian Bodywork Therapists alike will find these rhythmic, penetrating techniques fun to perform and receive, as well as powerful additions to your clinical methods of summoning and moving qi.

For Massage Therapists looking to expand their repertoire to include Asian Bodywork Therapy treatment styles and principles, this is a perfect introductory class. Once you have had a chance to get comfortable with these techniques, Bill will demonstrate and supervise practice of a whole body treatment to put those skills to use.

Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Course Description: In this hands on practical class, students will learn and practice specific Tuina treatment protocols which can be used right away to treat structural disorders of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. Students will identify specific joint and soft tissue problems, and will be instructed in appropriate Tuina techniques and acupoints to use to address these problems.

On Saturday Bill will examine structural disorders of the shoulders and elbow, and on Sunday the hand and wrist. He will cover diagnosis from a Chinese bodywork approach, including identifying Bi Syndrome, review Zang Fu Patterns of Obstruction of Qi in the Channels, Muscles, Joints, and Tendons, and assess pain, both chronic and acute, as a result of injury and trauma.
